Gnomes and Gardens takes our participants on a magical journey right down to the roots. Youth (ages 7 to 12) will craft their very own garden from the ground up – making decorative and unique planters, building garden friends to keep watch of their new seedlings and garden art to enjoy for years to come. Over the course of the week, your child will learn a wide array of skills and knowledge, all the while having a lot of fun. This camp introduces a holistic approach to visioning, planning, designing and building – all the while getting close to the growing world.
They will build a unique living garden where their own hands will fashion the planters, their imaginations will set the foundation for the magical creatures who will inhabit it and they will watch their garden grow by each passing day. Our makers will learn about how the sun gives energy to growing things and how they in turn give energy to life on our planet. Over the half week, they will construct a vibrant garden with a number of plants, design and build decor for it, observe a number of science demonstrations related to photosynthesis and even make their very own magnetic rock garden.
During this camp, your child will learn how to use a number of specialty age appropriate tools. For example, our jigsaws can cut wood and plastic, but cannot cut skin and are safe for child use ages 5+. They will use it in our custom studio where sawdust and air-born particles are sucked into the table itself instead of moving into the air, further improving the environment. Safety is our primary core value and all students will wear eye and ear protection in addition to health requirements (masks, social distancing, etc.).
Your child will also keep all the creations they make and have the opportunity to customize them from accessories and equipment in our Maker Store. They will receive a complimentary $5 daily allowance (no real cash value) for use at the Maker Store, helping them reinforce the value of money and decision making. The store experience helps ensure that every participant makes something truly unique, whether it is a seed upgrade, a special paint or something fun like troll hair.
After the week, your child will have a number of new skills, the knowledge to safely use them and the confidence to know they can succeed. They will also have a stronger and lasting connection to the natural, growing world.
